Going to the Zoo

This zoo in Chennai, India was unlike any other zoo I have ever been to...for one,
there was a monkey sitting right next to me in front of the monkey cage! What?!

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam 2007 #favphoto

I love this photo because it reminds me of how much I appreciated the way people appear to live their lives in Vietnam―houses stacked on top of one another, everyone sitting out in the street with friends and family, chaos with no real rush.

Trip to Three Floyds

This Saturday was Dark Lord Day at Three Floyds! It's an annual festival and the only day of the year to buy Three Floyds Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout. Though I'm not much of a stout drinker, this is the second year that Tim and I have gone and it is a ton of fun. Saturday was beautiful, we met a lot of nice people and really had a great day. Reggie's offers a free bus for Chicagoans going to the festival―the bus adventure alone is amazing.

Waiting in line for our Dark Lord, drinking beers from Chicago and Ohio and making friends.

The bus! Cheers! We're on our way to Munster, Indiana.

Chicago Doughnut Crawl

Stop one, Doughnut Vault.

My mom made an impromptu trip to visit me and my brother in Chicago this weekend, so we went on a doughnut crawl! I'm no doughnut fanatic, but this was a really fun way to spend the day!

We went to four Chicago doughnut hot spots (map): Doughnut Vault, Firecakes, Do-Rite Donuts, and Glazed and Infused. If I were to do this again, I would check the specials calendar at Doughnut Vault ahead of time and pick a warmer day - it was just a little too cold to really enjoy our donuts outside in the sun. Only Glazed and Infused had room to eat inside.

Our spoils at Doughnut Vault! We were in line for an hour, my birthday cake doughnut (bottom) was worth the wait.

Stop two, Firecakes! Just down the street. The Butterscotch Praline was Jack's favorite doughnut of the day.

Do-Rite Donuts, stop three. Arriving around noon, we missed out on most of their flavors, but they let us know we were lucky to get a Maple Bacon - we thought so too!

Final stop! We took a much needed walk to the Fulton Market Glazed and Infused.

Family of (dough)nuts. ;)

Giant Bobble Owl!

Both my mother and I were immediately drawn to this giant, larger than life bobble head. I walked right up to it and started bobbling its head while my mom started taking pictures...I'm not sure what this says about us.

Hugging a big bobble head, not promoting Hooters.

Yes. I'm sunburned. I'm at this mall buying aloe! (and a purse.)

Romance in Cancun

¡Hola from Mexico!

My mom and I are spending a few days warming up in Cancun! We've been laughing about how romantic our day was yesterday: We took long walks on the beach. We were seated side by side at dinner (candlelit) with a window to watch the chefs at work. And we spent Earth Hour on the beach watching the stars.

From 8:30 - 9:30 our hotel, Live Aqua, participated in Earth Hour! It felt like they really put in a lot of thought and effort to balance running a great hotel with participation in the movement. I'm so glad!

Beach for miles | Candlelight dinner at the best table in the house (and champagne with a cherry!)
Earth Hour: March 23, 8:30-9:30 p.m. | Lights out! Candles lit the hallway outside our room

Then I stayed up most the night finishing Gone Girl - so the romantic feeling ebbed away. But the book was excellent and I am very happy I finished book one for the trip! Wild is next on my list!

San Salvador, Bahamas

San Salvador, Bahamas

I spent a few weeks during college studying abroad in the Bahamas...yes, believe it or not, as a part of a real program (archeology and anthropology). My grandma is fond of sharing that she feels this particular trip was a boondoggle―and she isn't completely off the mark―but it was also an incredible and once in a lifetime experience.

The dig portion of my trip was at an old plantation on the small island of San Salvador. I loved clearing the brush, excavating the land, and mapping the results layer by layer. Our class worked hard during the day and had a lot of fun around the clock. A number of late nights were spent on this virtually private beach across from the research center where we stayed.
